It was completed in 1936. The Colorado river now comes into Lake Mead. The lake goes 180 km behind the dam and holds approximately 35 km³ water.

It is possible to visit the dam. You descend with an elevator into the internal of the dam and can visit to turbine rooms and walk through the galleries. Next to the dam is a museum that explains the history of the dam.
