North Scandinavia (July 2010)

I have been multiple times in Scandinavia, now the time has come to drag the kids and my wife around and share with them the beautiful northern region of Europe.

See also some large photos on our photo pages

We drove north without much stops. We used the classic route along the Swedish west coast with a short stop in Lund, Uppsala and Umea to arrive in Rovaniemi. On the way north we walked through downtown Uppsala. Further north we visited Gammelstaden, known for the old small houses around the church. We had a short stop at the lakes in Töre. Finally we crossed the arctic circle at Rovaniemi!

We reached North cape due in time to enjoy the midnight sun. We arrived in the afternoon and had bad weather (as usual). Although the weather was not quite promising we went back for a second visit shortly before midnight. We had luck and enjoyed the midnight sun!

After visiting the North cape we returned along the coastline in Norway via Hammerfest and Tromso. The views of the fjords are marvelous. Reindeer walking along the roads. We used the ferries to reach Tromso, we could enjoy the fjords from another perspective. On the way we visited the rock carvings at Alta.

Our way back goes through mid Sweden. On our way to Kiruna we walked through the Absiko National park. In Kiruna we visited the iron mine of LKAB. On the way south we crossed the arctic circle near Jokkmokk and visited Lappstaden, the Sami church town at Arvidsjaur.
